Chiusa Sclafani is a village of 2,500 people about 50 klm from Palermo in central Sicily. It has some churches with modest claims and the town website features how to best trace ancestors through parish records. No tourists. No modern shops. Just what Atticus was after.

Calamonaci is a small inland town in Sicily not from Agricento. It has a population of 1500 and a church with a relic or two. But as Atticus drove through, he was struck by the ebullient Sicilian character of the town square. No tourists. Just as you see it.

The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. The three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting the region of Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

The queue outside the Duomo even at the "best" of times - in January in the rain - is two hours long.  This image was captured in early January 2013.

Conserva is a small commune near Bari on the East Coast of Italy.  Main produce is olives and citrus.

This image of a field of lettuce features a wonderful trullo farmhouse, vindicating that scenes as true as this still exist in Southern Italy - but they are becoming  hard to find.

Monopoli is an Italian town and port, in Apulia. The town lies about 40 kilometres (25 miles) southeast of Bari on Italy's east coast. The town has important ancient and medieval links including one of Charles V's castles.  Alongside its modern port is a small and intact medieval fishing port.

Fiordo di Furore is a tiny fishing hamlet just south of Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast.  It forms the wildly romantic setting of many Italian films.  Roberto Rossellini, for example, shot two films here starring Anna Magnani, one of them the classic „Amore“.

This tiny bistro is at the entrance to the Square de la Place Dauphine on the Isle de la Cite.  Right down to the dog and the smokers dragging in unison, the image is reminiscent of by-gone Paris.

At the foot of the Eiffel Tower is a spectacular carousel.  Best photographed with its lights ablaze, later afternoon and dusk are the ideal times to capture the magic.  The Eiffel Tower is so iconic that only a glimpse is enough to place the location.

Ave Montaigne, which runs between the Champs Elysees and Pont d'Alma, concentrates almost all the haute couture houses in Paris in a single strip a few hundred meters long.   Side by side, and sharing the same street presentations, they all have doormen who try in vain to chase photographers away.  This window by Pucci was one of the most striking.
