Chateau de Tanay is a one thousand year old chateau in the Beaujolais region of France. It has extensive gardens and has maintained its original character. The chateau was converted to a B&B about 20 years ago and restored.

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department of France.  The city is famous for the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853 and added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.  The fortified city itself consists essentially of a concentric design of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans to prevent attack by siege engines. The castle itself possesses its own drawbridge and ditch leading to a central keep. The walls consist of towers built over quite a long period.

Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a commune on the Lot River in south-western France.  It is a member of the “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”. Its position, originally selected for defence, perched on a steep cliff 100 m above the River Lot has helped make the village a popular tourist destination and the entire town is almost a museum.  After it was "discovered" by the Post-Impressionist Henri Martin, it became popular with other artists and the home of the writer André Breton. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is 30 km east of Cahors, within the Quercy nature park.    The village sits on the French pilgrimage route – the way of St. James.  Pilgrims pass through en route to Cahors.

Annecy is 35 klm south of Geneva at the foot of Month Blanc.  This image of spectacular foliage was taken in autumn in the mountains South-East of the lake.

MONET'S BOATMAN

Claude Monet’s house and garden at Giverny outside Paris have been preserved with significant help from American benefactors.  The garden and the famous lilly pond from Monet’s water lilly series still exist much as Monet left them.  This beautiful image looks across the lilly pond towards a boatman raking weeds from the pond.

MONET'S GARDEN

Claude Monet’s house and garden at Giverny outside Paris have been preserved with significant help from American benefactors.  The garden and the famous lilly pond from Monet’s water lilly series still exist much as Monet left them.  This beautiful image looks across the lilly pond towards a boatman raking weeds from the pond.   Monet’s house may be seen in the background.

Abbesses and Port Dauphine are the last great art deco metro stations in Paris.  Although there is graffiti in the underground passages, the beautiful glass work and wrought iron at the entrances is unsullied.

In an austere and wild landscape, at the confluence of the gorges cut by the Ouche and the Dourdou valley, nestles the UNESCO world heritage village of Conques that seems to be lost in time.  Conques is an important staging point on the Way of St James and is designated as a national treasure.  Few villages in France (or the world) match its medieval authenticity.

The Paris café is possibly the most well-known image of the City of Light.    Le Bonaparte in St Germain des Pres is characteristic.  After rain it recalls “Midnight in Paris”.

Annecy is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.  It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 klm south of Geneva.  Beekeeping is a traditional cottage industry. Currently, there are 70,000 beekeepers in France, with 1,300,000 hives producing 18,500 metric tons of honey each year. In 2010, the French beekeeping sector’s estimated worth was 133.5 million euros.

The Federation of Hunting and Fishing of the Upper Loire occupies a splendid nineteenth century building in Le Puy en Velay in Eastern France.  The building is a little dilapidated and evocative of gauloises, Clochemerle and all things French.

Le Tchier de Boree is an artwork completed in 2008 by the sculptors Serge Boyer and Fabienne Verse. It comprises seventy stones, sculpted irregularly but forming 12 triangles and 7 corridors.  It symbolises a mystical connection between time, mythology and the cosmos.  It overlooks the village of Borea in the rugged Ardeche region south of the Auvergne.
