RAILWAY TRESTLE

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

IMAGE NUMBER 664c

In 1883 the Pittsburgh City Council required the Pittsburgh Junction railway to elevate their railroad on a trestle with 37 spans above 33rd street.  The trestle then leads to the Allegheny River bridge.  The railway is now disused and the tracks have been removed, but the trestles remain.  Interestingly, Uber's Pittsburgh technology centre is located on the Allegheny River adjacent to the trestles - Uber's driverless cars circulate beneath the trestles to and from the Uber facililty.  While taking these images, security staff from Uber insisted (unsucessfully) that Atticus should delete his images.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a tripod-mounted Phase One 645 Camera at ISO 200. Exposure of 1/250th of a second and an aperture of F10.  80 mm Schneider Kreuznach lens with leaf shutter.   The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back.

IMAGE NUMBER 656

The Mexican War Streets, originally known as the "Buena Vista Tract", is a historic district in the Central Northside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The district is densely filled with beautifully restored row houses, community gardens and tree-lined streets and alleyways. The area dates from 1848, around the time of the Mexican–American War, and consists largely of row houses, mostly Victorian-era.

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department of France.  The city is famous for the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853 and added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.  The fortified city itself consists essentially of a concentric design of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans to prevent attack by siege engines. The castle itself possesses its own drawbridge and ditch leading to a central keep. The walls consist of towers built over a long period.

COW & EMPORIO VILLAGE

SANTORINI, GREECE

Emporio is a village in Santorini located 12 km from Fira on the foothills of Mount Prophet Elias. The village has a strong medieval character and most of the houses have been well-preserved. Half way up the village is a 15th century fortress which looks as though it will slide down the hill at any moment.  The houses within the fortress are original and are evocative of Gaudi architecture.  Tourists have not yet discovered this extraordinary place, but when Atticus visited a group of architecture students were visiting on a field trip.

OIL JAR

OIA, SANTORINI, GREECE

Image Number 489

Oia is a picture perfect village in the north west edge of the Santorini island.  It extends for 2 kilometres along the edge of the caldera that forms the island. It is built on the steep slope of the caldera and the houses and restaurants are built into niches carved into the cliff on the seaward side. Oia is an idyllic complex of white washed blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses.  It offers excellent views of the sunset over the caldera.  In summer over 120,000 visitors from cruise ships visit Oia every day and the tiny main street literally becomes impassable.  Oia no longer has a local population - almost all houses have been converted to pensions.

WINDMILL

SANTORINI, GREECE

Image Numbers 471, 472 & 473

Traditional whitewashed windmills characterize the Greek islands and especially the Cyclades.  Some are kept in the traditional form and are not used today, while others have been renovated and work as hotels, cafeterias or art galleries. In the past, these windmills were of vital importance. Using the wind, which is so strong in Cyclades, people used to grind the wheat, the most important nutritional element that time. Most windmills were constructed in the 19th century and fell in disuse after the mid 20th century.  Many windmills retain their millstones and mechanisms.

MONENVASSIA

PELOPONNESUS, GREECE

Image Number 364

Monemvasia is a fortress town located on a tiny island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period.  The streets are narrow and fit only for pedestrian and donkey traffic. There are no cars on the island.  In recent years the town has seen a resurgence in importance with increasing numbers of tourists visiting the site and the region. The medieval buildings have been restored, and many of them converted to hotels.  Because of tourist numbers the streets become impassable during “the season”.

FISHING BOATS

GYTHIO, PELOPONNESUS, GREECE

Image Number 352

Gythio is a coastal town of 8,000 people in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece.  In ancient times it was the seaport of Sparta, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) north. Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. (See also other images from Mani).  Gythio has a lovely old port bordered with nineteenth century buildings.  Within the port, colourful wooden fishing boats are still operated by genuine local fishermen, unlike the phoney “fishing ports” in some other parts of Italy and Greece where the boats are untended, the fishermen gone, and the tourists plentiful.

SMALL CHURCH

MANI PENINSULA, GREECE

Image Number 344

Although not far from Athens, the Mani peninsula in the south of the Pelopponese has been remote for centuries. Until recently its villages could be reached only by boat.  The residents are characteristically gruff, tough, resistant to strangers (both Greek and foreign) and fiercely independent.  However even they are forced to admit the tourists who are now bused into their enclave mostly against their will.   The tourists, who expect to be welcomed throughout Greece, are shocked by the sullen Maniots.  However, the Mani Peninsula offers some of the most spectacular architecture and coastal scenery in Greece.  So Atticus, along with everyone else, went there just the same.

AREOPOLI

MANI, PELOPONNESUS, GREECE

Image Number 320

Areopoli is a town on the Mani Peninsula, Laconia, Greece.  Areopoli is situated near the west coast of the Mani Peninsula, and it is the capital of the Mani province.  Its characteristic tower houses, constructed with field stones, are distinct from the traditional blue and white buildings that characterize many Greek villages.  The disposition of the residents is also flinty.  Although not far from Athens, Mani has been remote for centuries and until recently its villages could be reached only by boat.  The residents are characteristically gruff, tough, resistant to strangers (both Greek and foreign) and fiercely independent.  However even they are forced to admit the tourists who are now bused into their enclave by their Athens-based countrymen.   The tourists, who expect to be welcomed throughout Greece, are shocked by the sullen Maniots.  However, the Mani Peninsula offers some of the most spectacular architecture and coastal scenery in Greece.
