ATTICUS DESIGN

THE SLOT CANYONS MOUNTED ON ACRYLIC

IMAGE NUMBER 1191

Antelope Canyon is a “slot canyon” carved by wind and water from just outside the town of Page in Arizona. Antelope is the most visited slot canyon in the USA, and perhaps the world. Pictures taken here adorn camera shops and photographic books throughout the world.

It took Atticus several visits and a deal of negotiation to set up for medium format on the tripod. However the result is a series of images which come to life when featured in a modern corporate or residential development. These images have been bonded to acrylic and make a powerful statement.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a tripod-mounted Contax 645 Camera at ISO 35. Exposure of 8 seconds at F11. 120 mm Zeiss lens. The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back in October 2015.

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE LAB

CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY, PITTSBURGH

IMAGE NUMBER 666a

The autonomous vehicle laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh can fairly claim to be crucible of the driverless car.  The lab contains a Cadillac developed by the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in 2007 and "driven" by President Obama- the state of the art at the time in autonomous vehicle development.  Carnegie Mellon subsequently sold their technology to Google and the rest is history.   Since then, some key staff from the Carnegie Mellon Lab went to work for Uber.  Atticus tried to convince the faculty that this iconic lab in a university basement should be transported, as it stands, to the Smithsonian.  Atticus had to content himself with carefully documenting the lab photographically.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a tripod-mounted Phase One 645 Camera at ISO 35. Exposure of 5 seconds and an aperture of f16.  28 mm Schneider Kreuznach wide angle lens with leaf shutter.   The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back.

33rd STREET RAILWAY BRIDGE

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

IMAGE NUMBER 665

The 33rd Street Railway bridge across the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh was constructed in 1921 in the age of steel and is now disused. The bridge is accessed down 33rd street by an elevated trestle, constructed in 1883, with 37 spans above 33rd street.   Interestingly, Uber's Pittsburgh technology centre is located on the Allegheny River adjacent to the trestles - Uber's driverless cars circulate beneath the trestles to and from the Uber facililty.  While taking these images, security staff from Uber insisted (unsucessfully) that Atticus should delete his images.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a tripod-mounted Phase One 645 Camera at ISO 35. Exposure of 1/8th of a second and an aperture of f22.  45 mm Phase One wide angle lens with focal plane shutter.   The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back.  The image has been cropped and straightened using Capture One.

THE SIXTEENTH STREET BRIDGE

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

IMAGE NUMBER 662

The David McCullough Bridge, commonly and historically known as the 16th Street Bridge, is a through arch bridge that spans the AlleghenyRiver in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The 16th Street Bridge was constructed in 1922 with a length of 1,900 feet (580 m) and a width of 40 feet (12 m). The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.  The bridge is one of the more popular bridges in the city of Pittsburgh and provides easy access to the Strip District and the North Shore.

Pittsburgh is a "city of bridges" with over 400 bridges crossing the three great rivers on which the city is built - the Ohio, the Allegheny and the Monongahela.  Many of the bridges are painted a distinctive yellow which has become associated with the steel industry, the Steelers Baseball team and the city itself.

KAUFMANN'S CLOCK

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

IMAGE NUMBER 660

Kaufmann's, Pittsburgh's largest store, called itself
"The Big Store" with good reason: it occupied over
a million square feet of space in buildings built in
1898, 1913, and 1955.

The flagship store in downtown Pittsburgh was built in 1887 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street .  Kaufmann's flagship Big Store had a landmark outdoor clock at Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street since the building's construction. The original clock was installed in 1887 and was free-standing with four dials.  It immediately became a popular downtown meeting place, with the oft-used phrase "Meet me under Kaufmann's clock." With the expansion of the store in 1913, the current clock was installed.

The clock is a Pittsburgh icon, and is often featured in visual materials representing and marketing the city. Both the Kaufmann's flagship building and the clock are designated as Pittsburgh Historical Landmarks. Upon announcing the 2006 retirement of the Kaufmann's name and the store's rebranding as Macy's, it distributed tote bags printed with the clock image and its phrase "Meet me under the Kaufmann's clock" to honor the store's 135-year history.  In 2013 the Kaufmann's Clock celebrated its 100th Anniversary.   To celebrate, Macy's redecorated the store's windows along Smithfield Street with photos of the iconic clock from over the years,

PITTSBURG

IMAGE NUMBER 654c

Although Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been remodelled and turned into an East Coast sylicone valley since its steel mills closed, vestiges of the rust belt remain.  These include Pittsburgh's spectacular early C20th sky scrapers which the city could never afford to replace subsequently.  As a result, Pittsburgh has a pocket of unique buildings which have served as a backdrop for many nostalgic and gritty movies, including the Godfather.  They centre around the 4th Ave Historic Precinct, including the Arrott and Commonwealth buildings, all constructed between 1902 and 1906 during the ascendancy of Pittsburgh's greatest son, the steel mogul Andrew Carnegie.

Atticus worked hard to capture the ghost of the greatest steel town in the world through his inner city images of Pittsburgh.  In particular he managed to exclude any buildings that did not date from the age of steel.  This image in particular aches for a lost age.  It is one of Atticus' favourite images.
