The autonomous vehicle laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh can fairly claim to be crucible of the driverless car.  The lab contains a Cadillac developed by the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute in 2007 and "driven" by President Obama- the state of the art at the time in autonomous vehicle development.  Carnegie Mellon subsequently sold their technology to Google and the rest is history.   Since then, some key staff from the Carnegie Mellon Lab went to work for Uber.  Atticus tried to convince the faculty that this iconic lab in a university basement should be transported, as it stands, to the Smithsonian.  Atticus had to content himself with carefully documenting the lab photographically.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a tripod-mounted Phase One 645 Camera at ISO 35. Exposure of 3 seconds and an aperture of f12.  28 mm Schneider Kreuznach wide angle lens with leaf shutter.   The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back.
