Today it is the largest and most important town in Mani. (See also other images from Mani).  Gythio has a lovely old port bordered with nineteenth century buildings.  Within the port, colourful wooden fishing boats are still operated by genuine local fishermen, unlike the phoney “fishing ports” in some other parts of Italy and Greece where the boats are untended, the fishermen gone, and the tourists plentiful.

CAPE MATAPAN

MANI PENINSULA, GREECE

Image Numbers 341, 342, 343

Although not far from Athens, the Mani peninsula in the south of the Pelopponese has been remote for centuries. Until recently its villages could be reached only by boat.  The residents are characteristically gruff, tough, resistant to strangers (both Greek and foreign) and fiercely independent.  However even they are forced to admit the tourists who are now bused into their enclave mostly against their will.   The tourists, who expect to be welcomed throughout Greece, are shocked by the sullen Maniots.  However, the Mani Peninsula offers some of the most spectacular architecture and coastal scenery in Greece.  So Atticus, along with everyone else, went there just the same.   This image shows Cape Matapan at the southern extremity of the peninsula.

FISHING BOAT

GEROLIMENAS, MANI, PELOPONNESUS

Image Number 325

Gerolimenas is a picturesque small coastal village at the southern end of the Mani Peninsula, in Laconia,Peloponnese. Τhe name, which means "Old Harbour", is thought to derive from the ancient "Ιερός Λιμήν" (Ieros Limen), meaning "Sacred Harbor". One of the remotest settlements in the Peloponnese, until the 1970s it was reached mainly by boat. In the past it was a major fishing centre, and featured substantial infrastructure such as a shipyard, ice supplies, and a fish market. Today the main industry is tourism.  In the 2001 census its population was 55 inhabitants.

THE CORINTH CANAL

GREECE

Image Number 292

The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland. The canal is 6.4 kilometers in length and only 21.3 meters wide at its base. Earth cliffs flanking either side of the canal reach a maximum height of 63 meters.  Before it was built, ships sailing between the Aegean and Adriatic had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese adding about 185 nautical miles to their journey. The building of the canal was finally completed on Oct 28, 1893. Due to the canal's narrowness, navigational problems and periodic closures to repair landslips from its steep walls, it failed to attract the level of traffic anticipated by its operators. It is now used mainly for tourist traffic. The bridge above is perfect for bungee jumping.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The image was taken with a hand-held Phase One 645 Camera at ISO 200. Exposure of 1/250 of a second to eliminate movement and aperture F5.   80 mm Schneider Kreuznach lens with leaf shutter.   The image was captured on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back.

THE MOAT

GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, BILBAO, SPAIN

Image Number 244

When the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in 1997, it was hailed as one of the world's most spectacular buildings and described by some as "the greatest building of our time".    Atticus Webb was so taken by the swirling organic forms and the play of light on the titanium cladding that he spent six hours photographing the exterior.  The museum closed for the day before he could make it inside.

TECHNICAL NOTES

THE GRAND CANAL FROM THE RIALTO

VENICE, ITALY

Image Number 240

The Grand Canal divides Venice into two parts, like an inverted letter S, and is about two miles long. It is the main thoroughfare of Venice and is constantly traversed by gondolas, launches, private boats and ferries.   The Grand Canal is intersected in all directions by one hundred and forty-six small canals and is crossed by three large bridges, two of which are iron, the third, the famous Rialto, being of stone.  This image was taken from the Rialto Bridge at about seven am.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Captured by Atticus Webb on a Zeiss Contax 645 medium format camera with a Zeiss medium telephoto 210mm lens at f22 with an exposure of three seconds.    The image was registered on a transparency using Fuji Velvia 100 ASA film.  It was then scanned in high resolution by Bond Imaging.  The image has been cropped to remove extraneous detail but has not been significantly manipulated.

BARGE

FONDAMENTA FOSCANNI, VENICE, ITALY

Image Number 239

Venice is distinguished above all cities, not simply for its canals, but because its treasures are largely intact from the fourteenth century.  We owe this to the fact that after Vasco de Gama discovered the route around the Cape of Good Hope in 1420, Venetian trade collapsed for evermore.  From then on, the Venetians could not afford to change the city they had inherited.   This image of a barge was taken directly across the canal from the apartment in which Atticus Webb was staying in the Dorsoduro area of Venice.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Captured by Atticus Webb mid afternoon on a Zeiss Contax 645 medium format camera with Zeiss 80mm lens at f11 with an exposure of 1/90th of a second.    The image was registered on a transparency using Fuji Velvia 100 ASA film.  It was then scanned in high resolution by Bond Imaging.  The image has not been cropped and has not been significantly manipulated.
