TIMMELSJOCH PASS

AUSTRIA & ITALY

IMAGE NUMBER 1055

The Timmelsjoch pass (Passo del Rombo in Italian) is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.509m that creates a link through the Ötztal Alps along the border between Austria and Italy. It's one of the highest asphalted roads in the Alps. The road is difficult and it’s a nightmare in the wet or dark. In the late 19th century the construction of a High Alpine Road was considered and the project was eventually realized in the mid 1950s. With construction work only possible from May to November the road was finally opened in July 1959 on the Austrian side. However, the connection to Italy was only finished in 1968. The pass road is an indispensable connection between North and South Tyrol. Work began in the 1930's when Hitler and Mussolini meet at the border at the top of the pass to agree to fund the project. There is a small museum at the top commemorating the construction.

This image shows the view towards Italy from the top of the pass. It is an extraordinary place. The road on the Italian side is truly hair-raising.

HEILIGENBLUT

AUSTRIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1041

One of the most photographed places in Austria, the village of Heiligenblut is one of Austria's most picturesque Alpine villages. With the majestic Grossglockner—Austria's highest mountain—for a backdrop, the town cradles the pilgrimage church of St. Vincent. Nowhere else does a steeple seem to find such affirmation amid soaring peaks. Some say the best time to experience this little slice of Alpine nirvana is after a leisurely dinner at one of the many Gasthöfs, gazing out at the starry firmament over the Hohe Tauern range. Others relish standing around an early morning fire used by hikers setting out to conquer the mighty foothills of the Grossglockner peaks.

ST. PETER’S BASILICA

ROME

IMAGE NUMBER 1017a

Situated on Vatican Hill in the UNESCO world heritage site of Vatican City, St Peter’s Basilica dominates the skyline of Rome and attracts millions of visitors. It has a capacity of over 60,000 people, covers 22,300 square meters and is one of the world’s largest churches. You can climb the 491 stairs to the top of Michelangelo’s dome. A church only becomes a basilica when the pope designates it, usually because of historical significance or if it houses sacred relics. Globally, there are over 1,400 minor basilicas; however, St Peter’s Basilica is one of only four Major Basilicas in the world. The three other major basilicas are also situated in Rome: St John Lateran, St Paul’s outside the Walls and St Mary Major. St Peter’s Basilica achieved its basilica status due to being built on the site where St Peter is said to be buried in 64 AD.

WILDFLOWERS

CORSICA, FRANCE

Wildflower season is particularly beautiful on Corsica. Tender pink, yellow, and white colors paint the island slopes when the wildflowers bloom. At this time the Corsican air is filled with a strong floral perfume. It is said that in Spring ancient mariners could sense their proximity to the island from the perfume in the air.

This image of the maquis in Corsica near Aregno captures the intense, varied and abundant wildflower display for which Corsica is world famous.

REDGUMS

MT STURGEON, WESTERN DISTRICT, VICTORIA

IMAGE NUMBER 941

Mt Sturgeon Station in the Southern Grampians of Victoria, was established by Dr Robert Martin in 1839. It is one of Australia's iconic merino wool producers.  After Martin's ownership, Mt Sturgeon became the jewel in the crown of the Armytage rural empire - although the family seldom visited from their urban mansion "Como" in Melbourne.  Mt Sturgeon's bluestone homestead is the essence of the Western District “squattocracy”. In the 1980's it was purchased by the billionaire, Alan Myers, the son of the local butcher, who has a passion for the village of Dunkeld which nestles outside the station.

For Atticus, the most exciting things about the property are the red gums beneath Mt Sturgeon, many of them hundreds of years old. There is is nothing like them elsewhere. They are the mightiest trees in Australia, notwithstanding the tourist promos of other districts.
