The monument commemorates the unification of Italy in 1861 and the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II. The impressive building was built between 1895 and 1911 on top of Palatine Hill. The Altare della Because of how large it is (135 metres wide and 70 metres high) the building was also given several nicknames, ranging from the wedding cake, the dentures, to the typewriter.

RONDA

ANDALUSIA, SPAIN

IMAGE NUMBER 714

Ronda is a city about 100 km west of the city of Málaga, within the autonomous community of Andalusia. Its population is about 35,000 .   The Guadalevín River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100-plus-meter- deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches.  The canyon is completely unexpected as the visitor approaches.

Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles spent many summers in Ronda as part-time residents of Ronda's old-town quarter called La Ciudad. Both wrote about Ronda's beauty and famous bullfighting traditions.  Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls describes the execution of Nationalist sympathizers early in the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans murder the Nationalists by throwing them from cliffs in an Andalusian village, and Hemingway allegedly based the account on killings that took place in Ronda at the cliffs of El Tajo.  Orson Welles said he was inspired by his frequent trips to Spain and Ronda.  After he died in 1985, his ashes were buried in a well on the rural property of his friend, retired bullfighter Antonio Ordoñez.

OIA BY NIGHT

OIA, SANTORINI

Image Number 478 & 479

Oia is a picture perfect village in the north west edge of the Santorini island.  It extends for 2 kilometres along the edge of the caldera that forms the island. It is built on the steep slope of the caldera and the houses and restaurants are built into niches carved into the cliff on the seaward side. Oia is an idyllic complex of white washed blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses.  It offers excellent views of the sunset over the caldera.  In summer over 120,000 visitors from cruise ships visit Oia every day and the tiny main street literally becomes impassable.  Oia no longer has a local population - almost all houses have been converted to pensions.

ZAKYNTHOS HARBOUR

GREECE

Image Number 387

Zakynthos is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, located off the west coast of Greece. The west and north coasts are extremely mountainous often with cliffs dropping many hundreds of feet straight into the sea.  The beautiful white cliffs that plunge into azure seas have to be seen to be believed; the water is wonderfully clear.  Zakynthos is an extremely lush island; the Venetians (who conquered it) referred to it as Il fiore del Levante-- the Flower of the Levant. Zakynthos, like its neighbour Kefalonia, was heavily affected by the massive earthquake of 1953 (only three buildings on the island survived) and subsequently a lot of its stunning Venetian architecture was destroyed. Ruins still lay in some parts of the island due to this. The main town was completely rebuilt.  Today tourism is the most important source of income, and Zakynthos is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.

THE LONDON EYE

THE THAMES, LONDON

Image Number 290

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London.  The entire structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft). When erected in 1999 it was the world's tallest Ferris wheel. Its height was surpassed by the 160 m (520 ft) Star of Nanchang in 2006, the 165 m (541 ft) Singapore Flyer in 2008, and the 167.6 m (550 ft) High Roller (Las Vegas) in 2014. Supported by an A-frame on one side only, unlike the taller Nanchang and Singapore wheels, the Eye is described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel".  It is currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel and offered the highest public viewing point in London until it was superseded by the 245-metre (804 ft) observation deck on the 72nd floor of The Shard, which opened to the public on 1 February 2013 It is the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3.75 million visitors annually.
