GALA DALI CASTLE

PUBOL, SPAIN

IMAGE NUMBERS 717(top)  & 718 (below)

The Castle of Púbol (or Gala Dalí Castle) is located in Púbol outside Girona, Catalonia. It was the home to surrealist painter Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala (but not at the same time). Gala is buried at the castle.

Dali had no hesitation in adding amusement value to the serious works of others. Here, he has painted over an old tapestry with a burning giraffe and a peeping saint.

After Gala's death in 1982, Dalí moved into the Castle for the first time. In 1984, a fire broke out in his bedroom under unclear circumstances, possibly a suicide attempt by Dalí.  Dalí was rescued and returned to Figueres, where a group of his friends, patrons, and fellow artists saw to it that he was comfortable living in his Theater-Museum for his final years.  In 1996, Gala's private castle in Púbol was opened to the public as the Gala-Dalí Castle House Museum.

OLVERA

CADIZ, SPAIN

IMAGE NUMBER 715

At the tip of the "White towns route", the city of Olvera is located in the province of Cadiz, near the borders of the provinces of Seville and Malaga.  The main monument of this city is itself. A phrase that exemplifies this reality is "Olvera is a street, a church and a castle, but what a street, what a church and what a castle!"  For that reason Olvera was declared “A Protected Area of Artistic and Historical Importance” in 1983.

Dominating the area, like the top of a pyramid, is Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (the Parish of Our Lady of the Incarnation) next to the Arabic Castle: it is the vertex of a white expanse of houses amongst olive groves. This church, in neoclassic style, was built by the orders of the Duke of Osuña in 1822.  Nicholas de Ribera, El Viejo, 'the old one', was born in Olvera in 1487 and took part in the conquest of Peru. In 1535 he was named the first mayor of Lima.

RONDA

ANDALUSIA, SPAIN

IMAGE NUMBER 714

Ronda is a city about 100 km west of the city of Málaga, within the autonomous community of Andalusia. Its population is about 35,000 .   The Guadalevín River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100-plus-meter- deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches.  The canyon is completely unexpected as the visitor approaches.

Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles spent many summers in Ronda as part-time residents of Ronda's old-town quarter called La Ciudad. Both wrote about Ronda's beauty and famous bullfighting traditions.  Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls describes the execution of Nationalist sympathizers early in the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans murder the Nationalists by throwing them from cliffs in an Andalusian village, and Hemingway allegedly based the account on killings that took place in Ronda at the cliffs of El Tajo.  Orson Welles said he was inspired by his frequent trips to Spain and Ronda.  After he died in 1985, his ashes were buried in a well on the rural property of his friend, retired bullfighter Antonio Ordoñez.
