WHEAL COATES TIN MINE

CORNWALL, ENGLAND

IMAGE NUMBER 1147

Wheal Coates is a former tin mine situated on the north coast of Cornwall on the cliff tops between Porthtowan and St Agnes. It is preserved and maintained by the National Trust. Earliest records indicate a mine at the site since 1692. The present mine opened in 1802 and was closed in 1889 when the price of tin fell.
The surviving buildings date from the 1870s when deep underground mining began at the site. This image shows the Towanroath Pumping Engine House (1872) which was used to pump water from the adjacent 600 ft Towanroath shaft.

PIETRAPERZIA

SICILY

IMAGE NUMBER 964

Pietraperzia is a town of 8000 inhabitants in central Sicily. Atticus came upon it while searching for romantic Sicily. In Pietraperzia he found a town without any modern shops or other new buildings. Very few people were to be seen - and no tourists. PIetraperzia, rather than its nearby neighbour Corleone, could have been a great film set for the Godfather.

SHIPWRECK

ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

Image Numbers 381 & 382

The shipwreck on the Greek Island of Zakynthos is one of the most photographed coastal icons in Greece and features in all tour guides and Greek tourist information.  Originally a smuggler ship, which lost engine power in 1981 and was washed ashore in a magnificent small bay.  Cruise ships anchor there during the “season” and the beach is heavily crowded – it is not unusual to have 20 ships all moored off the beach, each putting a few hundred people ashore at once. For the ultimate picture there is a small viewing platform some 600ft above the wreck where most of the picture postcard shots are taken from.  The more precariously you lean out of the platform, the more of the wreck you can see........

BARGE

FONDAMENTA FOSCANNI, VENICE, ITALY

Image Number 239

Venice is distinguished above all cities, not simply for its canals, but because its treasures are largely intact from the fourteenth century.  We owe this to the fact that after Vasco de Gama discovered the route around the Cape of Good Hope in 1420, Venetian trade collapsed for evermore.  From then on, the Venetians could not afford to change the city they had inherited.   This image of a barge was taken directly across the canal from the apartment in which Atticus Webb was staying in the Dorsoduro area of Venice.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Captured by Atticus Webb mid afternoon on a Zeiss Contax 645 medium format camera with Zeiss 80mm lens at f11 with an exposure of 1/90th of a second.    The image was registered on a transparency using Fuji Velvia 100 ASA film.  It was then scanned in high resolution by Bond Imaging.  The image has not been cropped and has not been significantly manipulated.

HOT POKERS

BRYCE CANYON, UTAH, USA

Image Number 200

Bryce Canyon is a national park in southern Utah. Small by National Park standards, its 56.2 square mile occupy the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.  The park is not a canyon, but a spectacular series of amphitheatres, each of which is carved at least 1,000 feet into the chromatic limestone of the Plateau. The geology, unique in the world, has been caused by erosion.  The colourful limestone rock has been shaped into bizarre slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos."  Tinted with colours too numerous and subtle to name, the whimsically arranged rocks create a wondrous landscape. Ponderosa pines, high elevation meadows, and fir-spruce forests border the rim of the plateau and abound with wildlife. This area boasts some of the world's best air quality, offering panoramic views of three states and approaching 200 miles of visibility.

THE GRAND TETONS FROM SCHWABACHER'S LANDING

WYOMING USA

Image Number 197

Schwabacher’s Landing is a boat landing on the east shore of the Snake River.  The vista of the Teton Range from Schwabacher’s Landing is one of the great mountain views of the United States.  Grand Teton National Park is in northwestern Wyoming. The park adjoins Yellowstone National Park and, in conjunction with surrounding national forests, constitutes one of the largest parks in the world (7,300,000 ha).  The park is an almost pristine ecosystem.  Flora and fauna from prehistoric times are still found here.  Moose, pronghorn, mule deer and bald eagles are commonly seen.  The park is named for Grand Teton, the tallest mountain in the range. The name is attributed to early 19th-century French speaking trappers -"les trois tetons" (the three teats) was later anglicized to Tetons. At 4,199 m Grand Teton is higher than Mt Cook in New Zealand.  Grand Teton abruptly rises more than 2,100 m above Jackson Hole. A dozen small glaciers persist at the higher elevations.

BAPTISTERY CEILING

FLORENCE ITALY

Image Number 154

According to Dan Brown (The Inferno) legend proclaims that it is physically impossible, upon entering the Baptistry of San Giovanni, not to look up.  High overhead, the baptistry’s octagonal vault spans more than eighty feet from side to side. It glistens and shimmers as if made of smoldering coals. Its burnished amber-gold surface reflects the ambient light unevenly from more than a million tiny ungrouted mosaic pieces hand-cut from a glassy silica glaze -  arranged in six concentric rings in which scenes from the Bible are depicted.
