SUNSET AT CAPE SCHANCK

MORNINGTON PENINSULA, VICTORIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1274

Cape Schanck is located at the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, fronting the waters of Bass Strait. There is no defined commercial centre at Cape Schanck as such, with nearby Rosebud and Flinders serving the area. Overlooking the promontory is the Cape Schanck lighthouse which was built in 1859 out of local limestone and features a rare spiral staircase made from stone. The lighthouse is surrounded by a reserve that includes a museum, former keeper's quarters and associated buildings.

This image was one of a series of images commissioned from Atticus Webb by the Amber Property Group for the Geoff Brady Collection of unique Victorian landscapes in 2020. The collection was compiled to mark the opening of the Sebel Hotel in Ringwood in February 2021. The images feature throughout the hotel.

Westminster Abbey is steeped in more than a thousand years of history. Benedictine monks first came to this site in the middle of the tenth century.  The Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of seventeen monarchs. The present church, begun by Henry III in 1245, is one of the most important Gothic buildings in UK. A treasure house of paintings, stained glass, pavements, textiles and other artefacts, Westminster Abbey is also the place where some of the most significant people in the nation's history are buried or commemorated. Taken as a whole the tombs and memorials comprise the most significant single collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the United Kingdom.

ST MARK'S SQUARE

VENICE ITALY

Image Number 246

St Mark’s Square is the principal public square of Venice.   It is dominated at its eastern end by St Mark’s Basilica with its great arches, marble decoration and Romanesque carvings.    To the right of the basilica is the bell tower, built in 1156 but reconstructed in 1902 after an earthquake.  On the left of the photograph is a long arcade known as the old procuracies, formerly the homes of high officers of state. The arcade on the right was rebuilt by Napoleon about 1810 and is known as the Ala Napoleonica (Napoleonic Wing).   It includes one of the world’s oldest restuarants, Florian – little changed since it was patronised by Mozart, Voltaire and Cassanova. St Mark’s Square is one of the busiest places on earth.  To shoot the empty square Atticus arrived before dawn and took this image before the sun rose.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Captured by Atticus Webb on a Zeiss Contax 645 medium format camera with a Zeiss wide telephoto 35 mm lens at f16 with an exposure of thirty-two seconds.    Fortunately the morning was still enough for the long exposure on the tripod and nobody entered the square. The image was registered on a transparency using Fuji Velvia 100 ASA film.  It was then scanned in high resolution by Bond Imaging.  The image has not been cropped and it has not been significantly manipulated.
