THE GRAND BAZAAR

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Image Number 546

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. In 2014, it is listed No.1 among world's most-visited tourist attractions with 91,250,000 annual visitors. Today the Grand Bazaar is a thriving complex, employing 26,000 people. It must compete with modern shopping malls common in Istanbul, but its beauty and fascination represent a formidable advantage.   Terrorism aside, it is one of the safest environments imaginable.  The site is so vast and the exits so few that a thief would be unlikely to outpace the hue and cry, with inevitable consequences.

OIL, CHEESE AND HONEY

ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

Image Number 380

Zakynthos is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea, located off the west coast of Greece. The west and north coasts are extremely mountainous often with cliffs dropping many hundreds of feet straight into the sea.  The beautiful white cliffs that plunge into azure seas have to be seen to be believed; the water is wonderfully clear.  Zakynthos is an extremely lush island; the Venetians (who conquered it) referred to it as Il fiore del Levante-- the Flower of the Levant. Zakynthos, like its neighbour Kefalonia, was heavily affected by the massive earthquake of 1953 (only three buildings on the island survived) and subsequently a lot of its stunning Venetian architecture was destroyed. Ruins still lay in some parts of the island due to this. The main town was completely rebuilt.  Today tourism is the most important source of income, and Zakynthos is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece.

Ave Montaigne, which runs between the Champs Elysees and Pont d'Alma, concentrates almost all the haute couture houses in Paris in a single strip a few hundred meters long.   Side by side, and sharing the same street presentations, they all have doormen who try in vain to chase photographers away.  This window by Pucci was one of the most striking.
