THE INNSBRUCK RATHAUS

AUSTRIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1054

Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol in southern Austria. Most tourist brochures refer to its spectacular location ringed by alps and to its skiing activities. But for Atticus the old town centre was a jewel, much more impressive and original than its more famous neighbour, Salzburg. It presents an almost intact 18th century streetscape and wonderful photographic opportunities, including views across the river.

Innsbruck’s gothic city tower was built in 1442-1450 as part of the former town hall, it rises 51 metres above the old town. Formerly used by watchmen on the lookout for enemies or fires, it now offers fabulous views of the entire historical city centre and beyond.

VW KOMBI WEDDING VAN

INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1046

The Volkswagen Type 2, known officially (depending on body type) as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, or, informally, as the Bus (US) or Camper (UK), is a forward control panel van introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following – and initially deriving from – Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle), it was given the factory designation Type 2. Atticus found this excellent example in Innsbruck, Austria, in use as a bridal car.

MOZART’S BIRTHPLACE

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1042

W. A. Mozart was born in 1756 in the “Hagenauer Haus” at No. 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg. Today, Mozart’s Birthplace is one of the most visited museums in Austria. His family lived here for 26 years, from 1747 onward, occupying an apartment on the third floor. With parents Leopold and Anna Maria as well as sister “Nannerl”, Mozart spent his childhood and much of his youth here. In 1773, the family moved to the house known today as the “Mozart Residence”, on Makartplatz Square.

On a summer’s day in July 2019 Atticus watched the world go by for an hour while he waited to get a clear shot without tourists. The opportunity came in a split second yet for ever more it looks like the street was empty.

HEILIGENBLUT

AUSTRIA

IMAGE NUMBER 1041a

One of the most photographed places in Austria, the village of Heiligenblut is one of Austria's most picturesque Alpine villages. With the majestic Grossglockner—Austria's highest mountain—for a backdrop, the town cradles the pilgrimage church of St. Vincent. Nowhere else does a steeple seem to find such affirmation amid soaring peaks. Some say the best time to experience this little slice of Alpine nirvana is after a leisurely dinner at one of the many Gasthöfs, gazing out at the starry firmament over the Hohe Tauern range. Others relish standing around an early morning fire used by hikers setting out to conquer the mighty foothills of the Grossglockner peaks.

HALLSTATT

AUSTRIA
