The tiny village of Besse en Oisan clings to the mountains on the French Italian border between Grenoble and Briancon.  Although the village probably has fewer than 300 inhabitants, Its "home page" on the internet carries the ronde:

C'est celui, ou j'ai passé mon enfance
(The most beautiful village in the world, is the one of our song.  The most beautiful of all the villages in France is the one in which I spent my youth.)

Briancon on the French-Italian border is said to be the most heavily fortified position in Europe, thanks to Vauban the architect of Louis XIV.  Small wonder that Napoleon also made his way to conquest via Briancon.  Some of the fortresses include major streets such as the Grand Rue, built by Vauban in the Fort des Tetes.

Livet et Gavet is a "ghost village" South of Briancon on the French/Italian border.  For three hundred years it was the centre of a rich metallurgical industry but the factories were overtaken by technology and closed one by one, leaving their ruins alongside the river that powered them.  Atticus visited the village three times to capture the brooding melancholia. No tourists visit Livet et Gavet.

This Salvia, abandoned in a cart, has continued to seed and flower long after the villagers have left.

ANNECY, ORGAN GRINDER

Annecy is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.  It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 klm south of Geneva.    On Sundays Annecy holds a wonderful street market along its distinctive canals.   Here the local organ grinder plays in front of the Thiou Canal with Palais de l'Isle castle in the background.   The castle, built in 1132, was the primary residence of the Lord of Annecy as early as the 12th century, and later became the Count of Geneva's administrative headquarters, and finally a jail from the Middle Ages until 1865.
