GRAND CANYON

COLORADO USA

Image Number 225

Captured from Mathers Point on the South Rim shortly after dawn. The Grand Canyon is a huge fissure in the Colorado Plateau carved by the Colorado River.  It is contained within and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, and the Havasupai Tribe. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.  It is considered to be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.  The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet / 1,800 metres).     The north rim is over 1,000 feet higher than the South Rim.  Opinions vary about the visual merits of the north and south rims.  Most of the tourist development is on the south rim.  The Grand Canyon is difficult to photograph because of the breadth of the vista and severe pollution which often frustrates the photographer.
