THE RIALTO BUILDING

SUNSET, MELBOURNE

Most images of the Melbourne skyline are made along the Yarra River or from the city itself.   The Pullman Quay West on the south bank of the river immediately west of the art centre gives access to this shot of the Rialto at sunset.

To achieve this image, Atticus Webb gained access to top floor after negotiating the concierge and the building’s airconditioning plant.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Captured by Atticus Webb from the 26th floor of The Pullman Quay West, Melbourne, on a Zeiss Contax 645 medium format camera with Zeiss 80mm lens at F5.6 with an exposure of 1/4 second.  File size 260 meg, 8 bit.  The image has been cropped to remove extraneous detail.  The image was registered on a Phase One IQ180 80 megapixel digital back at ISO 100.  The combination of sensor size and megapixels from this back captures approximately five times more detail than the highest resolution 35mm SLR camera currently available – and explains the high resolution of the image.
